Oil Market Report August 2015

Ahhh, the smells of summer….fish and chips on the beach, freshly mown grass, sun-lotion (particularly those coconut ones) and…erm, the smell of hot bitumen being laid on the road network. And the sights of summer? Well depending on the kind of holiday you’ve just had, they may be golden sands and turquoise waters. Or perhaps its massive traffic jams that come to mind, as road crews up and down the country mend, fill and construct new highways. But why oh why can’t they do it when the roads are quiet, instead of the very time that everyone goes on holiday…?

Considering the latest emergency situation in the Middle East and the fact that UK gas production is both in decline and being replaced by imports from the aforementioned region, this month’s feverish opposition to gas fracking is perplexing to say the least. Here is a development that in the USA has created economic growth, evened out the national balance of payments (fewer imports), generated jobs, indirectly improved national security, lowered the price of gas and significantly reduced CO2 emissions. What’s not to like…?

One of the more interesting aspects of the ongoing “scandal” around oil price manipulation was the sudden limelight afforded to the oil pricing agencies and in particular Platts (whose offices were “raided” alongside BP, Shell and Statoil). This is a company that few outside of the industry have ever heard of and for Joe Public, the idea that a pricing agency - who neither buys nor sells oil – “sets” prices on a daily basis will come as quite a shock.

When oil producing countries are discussed, it is usually the likes of Saudi Arabia, Iran, Russia, maybe even Nigeria that are mentioned. Affairs in these countries are constantly scrutinised, in case they have an impact on world oil prices.
